One of the most common questions asked by our customers. is “How Many Tiles Will I Need Per Square Metre?” So we’ve created this handy guide to answer the question.
Things to do before you go Tile Shopping
Before you go shopping for tiles, you will need to find out the measurements (area) of your room.
This will allow you to ensure complete tile coverage, budget accordingly, and avoid return trips to the shops for more tiles. The steps for determining how many tiles you may need are the same regardless of the surface. So whether you are tiling your bathroom or splashback, you can just grab your tape measure and calculator and get started!
Measuring for your tiles
So, before knowing how many tiles you will need, you will first need to work out how many square metres you have.
To do this, simply measure the length and width of the area you are tiling and multiply the two numbers together. The answer you get is the number of square meters you will need.
Example 3m x 2m = 6 square metres (60’000cm)
For rooms that are not a standard shape, the calculation is slightly different.
First, divide the area up into smaller segments so they are in square or rectangular shapes making it easier to work out the square meter.
Then follow the same calculation as above multiplying the length by the width for each individual segment. Then just simply add them all together.
But how many tiles do you then need?
This is a common question and depends on the size of your chosen tile. A tile that is 150mm x 150mm will equate to approximately 44 tiles to a square metre, but a 600mm x 600mm tile will give you 2.8 tiles per square metre.
You can use our online calculator which does this all for you.
Be sure to measure any doors, windows, or obstructions such as furniture or your bath. Then do the same calculations you used for the tiled area and subtract the size away from the overall total.
We always recommend adding an extra 7-10% just in case of breakages or wastage.
If all of this still seems too complicated then don’t worry. We’ve done all the hard work for you with our online tile calculator. It calculates how many tiles you need by the individual tile size, whilst also giving you the option to add an additional 7-10% for wastage.
