Zellige tiles – what are they?

what are zellige tiles?

Zellige tiles are traditionally handcrafted tiles made with natural clay extracted from Morocco. The clay is kneaded with water, before being moulded by hand, and naturally dried and fired in a kiln. Then Glass enamel is applied to the tile surface in multiple shades creating a metallic or opaque finish. The enamel is then melted and vitrified during another round of firing in a kiln. The final step of the production involves cutting the enamelled pieces into a collection of tiles in various shapes and sizes. Each Zellige tile is unique.

  • Originating in Morocco production dates back to the 10th century
  • Entirely handmade, local clays are mixed, formed, and then cut by hand
  • Hand-dipped in enamel glaze
  • Hand-stacked in open kilns
  • Open fired, often using olive pits (the stone of an olive)
  • Hand-finished with hammer-chisels

This enchanting film shows you very well that the true nature of the production is a highly skilled craft that has been passed down from generation to generation.

So as beautifully crafted as these zellige tiles are, they can present significant challenges to the installer and the consumer.

  • Imperfection comes as a standard so corners and edges protrude, this charm makes a simple wipe-down not simple
  • This is NOT a DIY product. Skilled tile installers are required to follow the recommended procedures that experts say are required to fix Zellige tiles without using grout.
