History of the Majestic
The Majestic was constructed in the early 1920’s as a cinema during a boom in the building of picture palaces. In 1969 it was closed, after which the building was used as a bingo hall and a nightclub. It is a place with rich history in a prime location in the heart of the city.
The building has recently undergone some renovation work in preparation of Channel 4’s new HQ. The building is consists of seven floors, three of which will be occupied by Channel 4 and two by Knights Plc. Knights PLC are a national law firm, with 13 locations nationwide. According to Coun Judith Blake, the leader of Leeds City Council, this transformation makes a statement about the future and aspirations of Leeds. The opportunities that Channel 4 bring to the city for the creative sector and the business sector is something to be excited for.
The Development
DLA Architecture were the architects for the refurbishment scheme and Sir Robert McAlpines was appointed the main contractor of this historic building by Rushbond. The renovation included a full restoration of the buildings exterior, a new atrium, Palm Court area and of course some brand new tiles.
The Tiles
We supplied over 1000m2 of porcelain tiles from Marazzi and Casalgrande. The tiles were used in the entrance, bathrooms and stairways. The main feature of the building, and by far the most spectacular is the amazing concentric circular feature in the Palm Court Area. The tiles were waterjet cut to an agreed layout, and look absolutely stunning.
