Porcelain tiles or Ceramic tiles? What is the difference?

Wondering what the difference is between porcelain and ceramic tiles? Well, we will be frank, there is no difference! Porcelain is just one of these 4 main types of tile.

  1. Clay body unglazed – there is no surface effect – the body is the surface, for example, red quarry tiles or “real” terracotta.
  2. The clay body, glazed – the surface effect is printed with glaze and is commonly used for wall tile production. This type of tile is also used for floor tiles when combined with strong glazes, but is often limited to internal use. 100% identical wall and floor tiles are difficult to achieve because of the different production processes used.
  3. Porcelain body, glazed – The surface effect is printed with glaze and is used for producing (identical) wall or floor tiles. Incorporates raw materials such as feldspar which provides a stronger harder tile that can be used externally as well as internally. Hard glazes can be polished with granite brushes to enhance the surface appearance.
  4. Homogenous unglazed porcelain – The surface effect is produced within the body, NOT printed onto it. The surface is matt when first produced, but it can then be polished to various degrees with granite brushes to offer a satin or glass-like finish.
