How to choose tiles

Picking new tiles can be a fun experience, the hours you spend Pinning on Pinterest and scrolling through Instagram to find the perfect tile. No matter whether you are planning a full renovation or a kitchen refurb your choose of tile will greatly impact the room so its an important one.

When picking your tiles, people tend to focus on the shape and the colour and don’t often stop to think about the suitability before falling in love with a tile. After all theres no point choosing a tile that will wear or start looking tried after 3 months because its not suitable for the space or foot flow. When it comes to tiles not all have the same qualities, our lush zellige tiles would crack and wear if used on a busy floor.

So with so many tiles all with different characters how do we know if a particular tile is suitable to our space?

Well its quite simple! This is where the PEI rating comes in. The PEI (porcelain enamel institute) tests tiles to find out how resistant and hardwearing the surface is. They rank the tile from 1 to 5 so we can determine which tile is best suited to our project. Isn’t it great when all the hard work is done for you.

PEI Rating 0

When a tile has a rating of 0 it means it is best kept in high up places that won’t get wet, meaning it is best suited as a wall tile. For example our Mellow Range are metro tiles that are available in 5 soft colours and are best suited as wall tiles.

PEI Rating 1

A rating of 1 meanings that the tile can be used on walls or worktops of even floors that have a light footfall e.g. your bedroom. Ideally it would be used on floors that don’t experience heavy shoes like heels but instead just those comfy slippers.

PEI Rating 2

A tile with a rating of 2 is similar to that of 1. It can be used throughout your home including slightly busier areas such as bathrooms and ensuites but we wouldn’t recommend it for your hallway.

PEI Rating 3

Tiles with a PEI rating of 3 can be used in any room of your home, including busy areas. They are ideal for kitchens, hallways and living spaces. For example our range of Lappato floor tiles are ideal for any room in your home.

PEI Rating 4

These tiles are the perfect choice for homes but also for commercial use in restaurants and bars and even office spaces that get intense and regular footfall.

PEI Rating 5

Finally tiles with a PEI rating of 5 are extremely strong and durable. They are the perfect solution for busy public spaces with high levels of traffic such as supermarkets, airports and shopping centres.

It’s important to note that the PEI rating of a tile doesn’t always reflect the price. Some of our smaller tiles are a little more expensive even though they’re rated for wall use only.
